    totoro forest project

Tak sent me the link to the Totoro Forest Project and I was totally blown away. The aim of the project is to protect and preserve the Sayama Forest near Tokyo, which inspired Hayao Miyazaki to create his most iconic film, My Neighbor Totoro. The project's benefit event is an auction of many artists' work, including Charles Vess, James Jean, Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese), Scott Campbell, Scott Morse, and a number of artists whose names & styles look vaguely familiar to me. Awesome.

Just when I thought Owen wouldn't be able to see a Miyazaki film on the big screen, Tak also sent me the trailer for the new Miyazaki & Studio Ghibili Film Ponyo on the Cliff (Gake no ue no Ponyo). It opens in Japan this weekend, which probably means it'll be another year before it hits the states. Just that he keep making movies is wonderful!

    That's so cool!

I LOVE Totoro, and I really love Miyazaki. I love so much of his stuff... Totoro of course, Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away... all so wonderful. I love his use of anthromorphic characters, it's always manages to completely suck me into his world. Can't wait to see the new one! :) I still haven't seen Nausica Valley of the Wind, really want to.

The art auction is going to be here at Pixar if you want to bid on anything! Or just take some pictures! :)

Nausicaa is great, too. The manga is worth reading; the movie is such a boiled-down version, but very much the essence of what he's about. I'm also really impressed by the actors who've done the English dubs since the Studio Ghibli/Disney partnership. We watch Totoro, Cat Returns, & Kiki's on a regular basis; Owen won't really watch Disney movies, but he loves Miyazaki's films.

And sorry to double-up on the comment, but Hi Christian! Nice to see you're reading my blog! I totally wish I/we could come out for the auction or art show, but the fall is insane for Tak's schedule, and the little man will be just starting Kindergarten. I hope the art goes for way more than I can pay for it, since it's such a good cause.
